No Surcharge Here — And There Never Has Been

From 1 October 2026, card surcharges are being phased out across Australia.

You may start seeing businesses changing their payment systems, removing surcharge notices or reviewing their pricing as the new rules come into effect.

For us at Those Little Poffertjes, there really isn’t much to change.

We have always absorbed our card-processing fees ourselves.

If your Poffertjes were $11.50, you paid $11.50.

No extra percentage at the checkout.

No little surprise when you tapped your card.

No difference between paying cash or card.

That has simply been part of the cost of doing business for us.

Zeller has advised businesses that its card surcharge function will be switched off from 1 October 2026 and that merchants who currently surcharge may want to review their pricing to allow for processing costs instead.

We’ve already been doing that from the beginning.

Of course, card payments aren’t free for the business. Every tap still comes with a merchant-processing fee, and when you add thousands of transactions together across markets, festivals and events, those small amounts certainly add up.

But we’ve always preferred to keep things simple.

The price on the menu is the price you pay.

So while 1 October may bring a noticeable change for some businesses, for Those Little Poffertjes it will be business as usual.

You choose your Poffertjes.

You choose your toppings.

You tap your card.

And there is still no surcharge added at the end.
